A new and improved version of Sport England’s National Benchmarking Service (NBS) is being launched today.
The updated NBS remains dedicated to providing critical data on site performance to sports and leisure centres, but sites can now opt for three different options, each at a substantially lower cost, to ensure the NBS is affordable for the majority of facilities.
Sports and leisure centres can choose from a Full Report – assessing access, utilisation, finance and customer satisfaction; an Efficiency Report – assessing finance and utilisation performance; or an Effectiveness Report, which takes access, utilisation and customer satisfaction into consideration. A one-page executive summary will also ensure the reports are clearer and easier to understand.
Mike Hill, NBS scheme manager and MD of Leisure-net Solutions, says: “The NBS has been providing clients with performance measurement since 2000. We’re really excited to be launching a revised and improved version of the NBS within just four months of taking over the management contract. Alongside a reduction in price, key improvements are a more user-friendly report and much more flexibility around the types of reports available.”
The new service will also, for the first time, form part of Quest, the UK Quality Scheme for Sport and Leisure.
Mike Hill says: “Centres being assessed for the Quest award will now be able to choose an NBS module as part of their accreditation. This will enable sites to ensure that they have accurate data on their performance, which has been compared with national benchmarks.”
The Sports Industry Research Centre at Sheffield Hallam University will continue to provide the technical analysis and reports for NBS clients. Co-director Professor Peter Taylor says: “In the current financial environment, it is more important than ever that public sports facilities can justify their position in local authority services and demonstrate improvements. The NBS is a well-established, vital tool to help them achieve these objectives and recent changes have made it even better value for money than before.”
